Of A Feather
Of A Feather
I’d never find those awaiting arms of home.
Two of a kind, never far from all wrong.
I found out late that real love is lighter than gold.
Truth or a lie. Tasted and swallowed up whole.
And I shine to see, here alive in me, a piece of you.
Death, alive in the night’s sky, humming the moon to dream.
Another sight eyes scarce believe.
Claw to fly in the crow’s eye. Murder, a million deep.
Another low, and I’m alone. ‘Lone in me.
Soar through the eye of hurricanes, flood rains, god knows.
Heaven disguised as a vast sky to roam (vast sky to roam)
The darkest hate seeps out from every pore.
And only just to hold back the tide, takes from me more and more.

Another low, and I’m alone. ‘Lone in me.
Death, alive in the night’s sky, humming the moon to dream.
Another sight eyes scarce believe.
Claw to fly in the crow’s eye. Murder, a million deep.
Another low, and I’m alone. ‘Lone in me.
WHAT WAS I THINKING?!?!
I wrote Of A Feather while experimenting with ideas like writing songs from odd perspectives or points of view. This song ended up being the best of those efforts. And generally, the true jewel of OCDH, in my opinion. The lyrics are written (mostly) from the perspective of a raven or some other carnivorous bird. I tried to explore the themes of unity when within the murder of crows and utter loneliness when not; exploring the sensations of soaring through the sky. And competitively clawing and fighting to fly at the head or eye of a murder of millions. I also attempted to paint the image of raven songs reaching up to the moon as the massive murder blots out the night sky as it hunts. All these visual fragments in my head convinced me to go all-in on the concept and “of a feather” is the ultimate result. Musically, it’s a fairly straightforward A minor idea over a purdy shuffle. There are several synth tracks layered in the hook which I thought gave it good depth in the audio field. And, the musical highpoint of the tune is likely the accompanying string part that bolsters the groove in the intro and first verse. Or the guitar solo that serves as the song’s climax...
